March 21, 2018
A leader of a farmer’s group in Pantukan, Compostela Valley was shot dead in his house at 6:30 in the evening.
Agudo Quillio, 52 years old and chairperson of Hugpong sa mga Mag-uuma sa Pantukan (Humapan) was shot by three men who barged into his house and pumped bullets into Quillio’s chest.
Quillio led Humapan in the campaign to stop the US-owned St. Augustine Mines Ltd in its mining exploration activities in the municipality. The mining exploration in Kingking is one of the prime mining areas promoted during the Arroyo presidency. He also joined the campaign of the Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries in getting back their lands from banana plantations in Davao del Norte.
The human rights group Karapatan suspects the assailants are under the 46th Infantry Battalion, and lambasted the military for its vicious attacks on anti-mining advocates. Previously, an anti-mining leader in Pantukan, Teresita Navacilla, was killed in January 30, 2016.
