Justice For Linus Cubol

November 27, 2018 at around 8 in the morning, Linus “Bebot” M. Cubol, former chairperson of Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) and Anakpawis Partylist coordinator in Caraga, was shot dead by 2 motorcycle riding men believed to be agents or assets of the 29th IBPA. He was attacked while he was at his furniture shop just beside his home in Purok 1, Poblacion 1, Santiago, Agusan del Norte. He sustained 5 gunshot wounds causing his death.

Cubol was formerly the president of Manila Mining Corporation workers’ union in Placer, Surigao del Norte in the 1990s. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Labor Center for Education and Research (LACER) based in Cagayan de Oro City in 1998. During the early 2000 he became general secretary then chairperson of the KMU-Caraga, and for a short time was Bayan-Caraga chairperson.

In 2008 he chose to concentrate on his family’s livelihood and established his own furniture shop in Santiago, Agusan del Norte. While running his small business he ran for municipal councilor of Santiago in the 2007 and 2010 elections and became the first Caraga coordinator of Anakpawis Partylist. Despite his hectic work at the furniture shop he was readily available for consultations with workers of various companies who continued to seek his advice on labor problems until his death.

Military agents continued to threaten and harass him in his hometown. Just a week before he was killed, intelligence agents of the 29th IBPA interrogated him for his continuous participation in labor and multi-sectoral activities.
