Justice For Dr. Avelex Amor
UP Medicine Student Council
November 20, 2018
Today is a day of mourning.
Dr. Avelex Amor was shot to death around 8:00AM today by unidentified gunmen along the national highway of Guihulngan town in the province of Negros Oriental. He is the Chief Medical Officer IV of the Canlaon District Hospital and served as a Doctor to the Barrios. Dr. Amor is the fourth physician to have died in this administration with Dr. Dreyfuss Perlas, a physician under the Doctor to the Barrios Program of the DOH, Dr. Shahid Sinolinding, an ophthalmologist, and Dr. George Repique, provincial health officer of Cavite and an alumnus of the UP College of Medicine. Up until now, justice for the former 3 doctors has not been served.
We call on the government to address not only the recent death of Dr. Amor but also the deaths of the other doctors and the numerous frontline health workers. As the state aims to provide health for all, one if its main goals should be the protection of human resources especially those in the community.
We call on our fellow health professionals to remain vigilant and relentlessly call for justice, and to continue serving the underserved.
