On the Bureau of Immigration’s Deportation Order For Sr. Fox

“The Bureau of Immigration order being used to justify the persecution of Sr. Patricia Fox is both vague and arbitrary, certainly a dangerous tool for foul-mouthed and tyrannical leaders who fear international solidarity. Sr. Fox deserves to stay in the country, surely more than the parasites in government who have willingly plundered and violated the rights of the majority; and definitely more than pretentious nationalists who might as well give up our territories to US and China. She has sufficiently answered all allegations, remained true to her mission, and expressed her solidarity to the Filipino people,” said Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay.

On July 19, 2018, Sr. Patricia Fox and her legal team received the Bureau of Immigration’s order for her deportation; her name is also to be included in the BI watch list. The BI’s decision came a month after the Department of Justice voided the former’s order to revoke Sr. Fox’s missionary visa.

Sr. Fox was investigated for allegedly joining in “political activities”, among them an international fact finding mission in Mindanao. The said mission aimed to document human rights violations done against farmers and peasant communities. Last April 2018, the BI investigated and arbitrarily arrested Sr. Fox on the basis of an order released during the Aquino administration, which prohibited foreign nationals from participating in activities deemed political.

The Karapatan official noted the increasingly disturbing trend of the Duterte regime’s contempt for church workers, including missionaries, who extend solidarity to the poor. She said that “Duterte, at the end of the day, remains a coward in the face of so many who have courageously resisted against his anti-people policies. There is no denying that this government is bullying and persecuting church people for taking a stand.”

“We call on all organizations, especially those who have supported Sr. Fox before, to again unite and resist the BI’s unjust decision. We stand by our call to stop the deportation of Sr. Fox,” Palabay concluded.
