Farmers Dislocation

November 27, 2018

HABINI BAY- a mass dislocation and a loss of livelihood to the farmers of Laguindingan.

The Laguindingan Farmers Association (LaFA), Moog Farmers Association (MOFA) and Tubajon Farmers Association (TuFA) condemns the ground-breaking ceremony of the proposed “HABINI BAY” project held at Seda Hotel last November 7, 2018.

The 526-hectare Ayala Corporation project located within the municipalities of Alubijid and Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental proposes a development of a Seaport. Along with this port will be commercial businesses which will take over the lands of the resident farmers. The Habini Bay Project is another example anti-poor commercialization of the greater Laguindingan and Alubijid area.

The Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas-Northern Mindanao Region believes that this kind of development is one-sided. It only benefits those in the Government and the big corporation, not the farmer-residents of Laguindingan. These development projects increase the profit of the corporations by expanding their businesses and grabbing the farmers’ land through unlawful practices

The Habini Bay project is reminiscent of the construction of the Laguindingan Airport. During its ground-breaking ceremony, the Ayala Corp. promised to provide jobs for the affected farmers by employing them to be construction workers. It also agreed to provide benefits to the affected farmers such as livelihood, relocation and disturbance compensation. But these turned out to be false promises. The Ayala Corporation continues to disregard the 2013 Supreme Court decision is to give disturbance compensation to the Laguindingan farmers affected by the construction of the airport

KMP-NMR also calls out Governor Yevgeny “Bambi” Emano for gracing the said ground-breaking ceremony. For Gov. Emano, this project would further attract companies to invest in the province. But he does not consider the negative impact of these “development project” to the farmers and residents of the two municipalities.
